Club Makumba has just released their new single, “Malcolm X,” a powerful tribute to Malcolm X, an iconic figure in the anti-racist movement in the United States and a champion for the rights of African Americans. The single is accompanied by a video directed by Bruno Soares, recorded during the band’s concert at Teatro de Palha in Aljezur last July. The video offers an immersive experience, merging the intense sound and political charge of the track with the venue’s unique atmosphere, creating an authentic and impactful performance.
Teatro de Palha, known for hosting innovative artistic initiatives, is a temporary installation from the Lavrar o Mar project in Aljezur. It transforms straw bales into a large open-air structure where nature and art converge. Designed by architect Pedro Quintela, the theater is inspired by the natural undulations of the estuary plain, showcasing an organic and ephemeral architecture that harmonizes with its surroundings.
For the live video creation, Club Makumba received support from “The Spotlight Prize,” an EUROPAVOX initiative co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe program.
This year, Club Makumba has been touring the country with “Sulitânia Beat,” their second full-length album, released in January. “Malcolm X” represents another step in the band’s ongoing work, focused on merging urgent social themes with new sonic explorations, transporting audiences into an experience of social reflection and musical expression, using “dance as an act of resistance.”
