Luís Varatojo, a musician and producer known for bands such as Peste & Sida, Despe e Siga, A Naifa, and Fandango, created his first solo project, Luta Livre, in 2021. In this Luta (Fight), there are no constraints or limitations, no formatting or taboo subjects; everything is allowed, and nothing is forbidden. Rock, chula, rap, and fado are the raw materials for a series of songs that address the issues shaping and influencing our lives today—financial crises, climate change, housing problems, city gentrification, workers’ rights, misinformation, everything that we need to debate.
With two albums released, Técnicas de Combate (2021) and Defesa Pessoal (2023), Luta Livre is a call to citizenship through music, because these times demand decisive actions and straightforward words.
“FRUTA DA ÉPOCA” is the fifth single taken from the album Defesa Pessoal.
Featuring rapper Estraca, whose sharp rhymes help unravel the mystery of the fruit, this new version also includes the voices of Orlanda Guilande and Anastácia Carvalho from the Gospel Collective, in addition to João Gentil’s accordion, Iuri Oliveira’s percussion, and Ivo Palitos’ vocals, all present in the original recording. The video, featuring graphic animation, was created by Andréia Reisinho Costa.
